Import customer lists and materials from Excel

Most fiber work starts as a spreadsheet: a telco sends a list of customers to connect, or the depot keeps its material list in Excel. FiberAdmin reads the file as it is, matches the columns, shows you what it will import and what it can’t, and only then saves.

Files as they arrive

Upload .xlsx, .csv, .tsv or .txt files of up to 10 MB, or paste rows copied straight from a spreadsheet. Older .xls files have to be saved as .xlsx first, and the importer says so instead of failing silently. A file can hold up to 5,000 rows, imported in batches, so a whole weekly list from a telco goes in at once. A downloadable template shows every column FiberAdmin understands.

Columns matched in five languages

Headers such as Kundennr, Nom, Telefoni, PLZ or Indirizzo are recognised automatically, because FiberAdmin knows column names in German, French, Italian, Albanian and English. Any column that wasn’t matched, or was matched wrongly, can be pointed to the right field by hand. For clients, the fields include customer ID, contract number, full name or first and last name, phone, email, street, postal code, city and coordinates.

Problems shown before anything is saved

The preview marks every row as ready, needing a fix, or a duplicate, and you can filter it down to the rows with problems. A client needs a name; email addresses and coordinates are checked for valid values. A customer ID that already exists in FiberAdmin, or appears twice in the file, is skipped instead of being imported again. For materials, the same rule applies to the SKU.

Linked to the contractor who sent the list

When you import a customer list, choose the contractor and project it came from. Every imported client is linked to them, so the work orders you create for those clients count towards that contractor’s SLA and show up in their report. Materials are imported the same way, with name, SKU, unit, category, manufacturer, supplier, purchase price, minimum stock level and whether each unit has a serial number.

How it works

  1. 1Choose what you’re importing: clients or materials.
  2. 2Upload the file, or paste the rows from your spreadsheet.
  3. 3Check the column matching and correct any column that was missed.
  4. 4Go through the rows flagged with problems or as duplicates.
  5. 5For clients, pick the contractor and project, then import.

Questions

Which file formats can I import?

.xlsx, .csv, .tsv and .txt files up to 10 MB, or rows pasted from Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice or Google Sheets. Old .xls files have to be saved as .xlsx first.

What happens to duplicates?

Clients are compared by their customer ID from the telco, materials by their SKU. If the ID already exists in FiberAdmin or appears twice in the same file, the row is marked as a duplicate and skipped, so nothing is imported twice.

Can I import work orders directly?

Not at the moment. The importer creates clients and materials. Once a telco’s customer list is in, you create the jobs for those clients with the work order wizard, which takes the contractor and project from the client.

Is there a limit on file size?

Up to 10 MB, 5,000 rows and 100 columns per file. Larger lists can be split into several files and imported one after the other; duplicates between them are skipped.
